Chinese Culture Summer Camp

Brief Introduction

Oriental Pearl School is a new-type, modern, international boarding school. The campus covers an area of 40 hectares and has a built up area of 120,000 square meters. It is surrounded by rivers on three sides, and is in a rural setting. While the whole campus keeps harmony between building groups, its units adopt the styles of representative buildings of many countries. The campus has a green area of over 30,000 square meters with many shade trees and luxuriant, well-spaced lawns and flowerbeds. This embodies the school ideal of giving to the students' world concepts and encouraging the students to embrace nature. The facilities of the school with respect to education, teaching, student entertainment, living, labor skill training, etc. are advanced and complete. The school distinguishes itself among middle schools and primary schools in Mainland China with respect to campus environment, cultural atmosphere and flavor, and modern teaching facilities and serves as an institution specializing in training students for the 21st century.

The school lies in Shatian Town not far from Taiping (Humen). It takes one and a half hours by ferry from China Town Pier, Kowloon to Taiping and one hour's ride from Luohu, Shenzhen to the school. People are hospitable and the public security is good here. There are 25 security guards who patrol the campus 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Nine years has passed since the school was established but there hasn't been a single incident such as stealing or robbery. None of the students have a criminal record. All the students are required to have medical examinations before we accept them. Anyone who has an infectious disease is rejected. Summer school participants are required to provide their medical exam report.

In the students' dormitories we provide hot and cold running water 24 hours a day. Every room has a bathroom, individual cupboards and mosquito nets. Four students share a room. The students' cafeteria and all dorm rooms have air conditioners. The school has laundry service but underwear must be washed by the students themselves. The school arranges one boarding teacher for each class to supervise the students' behavior, work and rest.

We arrange school buses to pick up summer school students and parents at Luohu and Huanggang in Shenzhen or at the port of Taiping (Humen). We also provide convenient transportation for the parents to shopping in nearby towns.

Course Design

HUANYING! It's fun, it's absolutely in a Chinese environment and it is all day long! Imagine enjoying Chinese Kongfu, arts, swimming, and sight seeing and other activities all in Putonghua. Come meet new friends and have fun. Learn while you play. This program is not an academic instructional program.

The camp is held in Mainland China so it is easy for us to create an environment where only Putonghua is spoken, but we can adapt to meet varying needs of students. Although the objective is an immersion experience, a child does not need to speak Putonghua to enroll in the Chinese Cultrual Camp. Children at all levels of Putonghua will benefit from this fun filled event with independent camp experience.

As much as possible, the teachers and aides will speak only Putonghua. Any spoken English and Cantonese will be limited to minimal initial activity directions. The goal is total Putonghua. Children are grouped with others of their own age and levels of Putonghua. This program is designed for children above 7 years of age.

We will read in Mandarin and write in Chinese. Students will read Chinese literature such as stories, essays and poems. Students will also learn to write essays and stories and work on everyday character writing and calligraphy.

Arts and crafts, Chinese history, music, songs and dances and games will be taught to go along with all the themes above.

Duration of the camp: July 13 to August 3. Students can choose to join one week program
